Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tithi?▼
A tithi is a lunar day: the time it takes the Moon to gain 12° on the Sun. There are 30 in a lunar month — 15 in Shukla paksha (waxing, ending at Purnima) and 15 in Krishna paksha (waning, ending at Aunsi). A tithi can be shorter or longer than a solar day, so it rarely starts at midnight; patros give the tithi running at sunrise.
What is Rahu Kaal?▼
Rahu Kaal is one-eighth of the daytime, between sunrise and sunset, traditionally avoided for starting new work. Which eighth it is depends on the weekday — the last on Sunday, the second on Monday, and so on — so its clock time changes with the season.
How is this panchang calculated?▼
From the positions of the Sun and Moon (Meeus's astronomical algorithms), with the Lahiri ayanamsa for nakshatra and rashi, read at sunrise in Kathmandu. It matches the tithis of the official 2083 festival dates. Festival days themselves are fixed by the Nepal Panchang Nirnayak Samiti and can follow different rules.
